Mislabeled chances

He awakens by water splashing on his face

Any sign of comfort dissipates without a trace

Bodies stacked upon sleeping hope

Tears fall from eyes unable to cope

The smell of death lingers in air stale with pain

As he looks at an endless blue horizon, he prays for rain

The water they brought is gone

Everything that could, went wrong

Corpses litter the deck of this small ship

A tear rolls down his cheek as he bites his lip

He left bullets without names to find chances yet unclaimed

Ran from explosions decorating the streets

To learn a language he never tried to speak

The memories of his life dance in the form of waves on this sea

They crash on the hull of a ship stained with reality

His first kiss was rendered awkward due to death claiming her lips

For who would be happy to have tasted the love of a soul gone

The first girl he ever loved had a passion for dancing, oh how she swung her hips

But vile beasts hiding beneath the skin of men stole her favorite song

She no longer dances, she merely rocks back and forth

He had to run away to see if a new life could be brought forth

Hoping for the mercy of strangers he heard tales of

Praying that history is not an indication of their current mentality

But as the shore comes in sight, he is overcome by fright

His nerves won’t stop screaming, his legs won’t stop trembling

He has lost everything but hopes to find an inkling of what he had

Safety will suffice if happiness isn’t available

He sets foot in this new land

He is the only one still alive, it’s not what he had planned

He is greeted by guns and commands he has no choice but to follow

For a few moments, he dream has never seemed as hollow

But food is provided and shelter is given

The glances of loathing and disgust, the outside chants of hatred are forgiven

They wouldn’t act this way if they only knew

If it was only one of his past few days they had to go through

But he loves them for giving him rest from the fear of death

The fear of not being accepted is one he can deal with

The life of an immigrant lost in a world with no country to claim as his own

A soul amidst regulations and laws will forever feel alone
