Take a breath … with that, you just sent oxygen through your body
That oxygen travels to your organs and everything functions normally
Oxygen gets around by blood cells and those are shaped liked donuts
And inside those cells are little balls called haemoglobins
They’re responsible for holding the air and making sure it gets there
That’s how it goes for someone without sickle cell
A normal body with no hereditary story to tell
But sickle cell turns haemoglobins into something like a stick
And because they are inside your blood cell they turn the what should be donut into a … sickle
Cause of that the carrying of oxygen went from fast to a slow trickle
Since your veins are made for donuts to go through
Sickle shaped objects get stuck that’s when oxygen can’t get through
Imagine you can breathe but your body couldn’t
Your organs are screaming for air but your body refuses to give it
Those exact same sickles are attacking your spleen into submission
Damaging your lunges, this is a disease with a mission
It wants to go into a crises, where pain is the only thing you feel
Darkness is the only thing you see, and your body is no longer yours
It belongs to this freaking sickle cell disease, and the only thing you can say is please, please body calm down
But even those words get slurred because your brain isn’t functioning as it should, so your body doesn’t care, all it wants is air
And if it doesn’t get it, you have a stroke, clinical or silent
Clinical you know what’s going on, silent no, but it’s just as violent
Those sickles scratch your veins to where your heart can’t pump right
Gather behind your eyes just so they can take away your light
And all you can do is hope that your body has the power to fight
And power is the one thing that sickle cell won’t give you
All it does is take, takes the dream of having a fully healthy child
Takes your time, sickle cell if left unchecked will even take your mind
And your entire life consists of nothing more than fear
‘Cause you don’t know what sets it off, or when you’re in a crises what got you there, all you can do is scream for morphine
