This place has an eternal sweetness to its air, that is unrivaled anywhere else in the world. But the cautious at heart soon recognize the hint of savagery embedded in it. This place is beautiful, but it was destroyed by this one man. He was able to talk to the roses and have them respond to his words. They would bloom brighter, smell more exquisite, and dance in the wind when the man spoke to them. His name was Clowny McLieLie and his soothing voice soon became like a drug to the roses. But what McLieLie didn’t know was that this entire island was under the domain of an evil being called Mailap. Mailap didn’t like the power the man had over the roses but understood that the roses loved it. She respected her flowers and wished nothing but the best for them.
But jealously made her act in ways unbecoming.
She fed McLieLie a drink laced with poison. The poison wasn’t meant to kill him, only to silence him. Mailap wanted to be the only one her flowers adored and couldn’t stand the competition. The man drank the poison, fully thinking that Mailap was finally being nice to him. For he had loved her from the moment he saw her. But he didn’t know that his actions were hurting her the way they were. As intended the poison didn’t kill McLieLie but it didn’t silence him either. McLieLie lost the sweetness in his voice but kept its soothing effects. He would still talk to the flowers, and they would still react to him just as they had before. Mailap turned blue in the face to the point it extended to her hair.
She had blue hair after that. She looked like a pretty clown. She was certain her poison would work, and its seeming failure baffled and enraged her. She locked herself in her room and started punching her books. She hung a few of them up on a string and used them like a sandbag. Words were flying out of those books like crazy. She had some real hitting power. Because she was locked away in her room, surrounded by words brought forth from despair and rage she missed it. She didn’t notice the change in her island. McLieLie spoke to the roses every day without fail, believing he was making them feel good. But the poison he consumed twisted and merged with his voice. Every time he spoke to the flowers, he poisoned them with his words. The roses took the poison in and let it seep into their roots. Which in turn became part of the island itself. Mailap had inadvertently poisoned her own domain.
She was immune to the poison, but the roses turned wicked and pricked McLieLie every time he came close. Eventually, he got fed up and left. He asked his friend, our hero, to come and talk to the roses in his stead. Believing that even though the roses didn’t like him anymore, they still deserved someone to be there for them. Our hero spoke to the roses, but to no avail. They pricked him as well. He was being blamed for poisoning flowers he had never seen before. Mailap after realizing what happened to her island was overcome by grief and sadness. She saw our hero doing his best to talk to the flowers, but she never made contact. Instead, she turned herself into the giant rose you see before you.
In the hopes that her regret would soothe and perhaps even heal the poison, she let take over her island. Our hero, of course, never knowing who or what the big rose was, spoke to it with all the love he could muster. Thanks to his efforts and compassion, the poison has turned sweet. But if it were ever to meet envy, it could just as easily destroy everything in its path. Poisoning a beautiful soul with pure intent will ruin your own. That is the story of this island.
